Alicia González

Having grown up in Back of the Yards, I consider it a privilege to return to the neighborhood that formed me and to work at a school with such a strong sense of community, whose leaders see parents as partners, with student voice at the center.

I am a heritage speaker of Spanish, and attended high school both in Chicago in Monterrey, Mexico. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I earned a Bachelors in French and a Masters in French Literature, including 3 years of study at the Université de Paris, La Sorbonne.

I have vast experience teaching both French and Spanish at all levels and am devoted to connecting students with authentic language and culture both in the classroom and through travel to target language countries made accessible through school-based travel planning and creative fundraising initiatives. I have worked extensively on developing my practice and curriculum, with a focus on standards-based outcomes centered in equity, cultural responsiveness and a decolonization of the curriculum.

It is a dream come true to teach the two languages I love along with a group of dedicated teachers at an amazing school in the neighborhood where I grew up. This year, 2022-23, I will be teaching ab Initio French Year 1, Honors Heritage Spanish 1 and AP Spanish Language and Culture.
