Next week we will be celebrating Black History Month with a spirit week! Make sure to participate in next week’s Black History Month Spirit Week! Each day has a theme made to honor a significant person, time period or tradition that has impacted our history, culture and traditions, so please join us in celebrating Black History Month!
Monday - Wear purple for Ruby Bridges. She took the first step to desegregate schools and it has become a tradition for people to wear her favorite color, purple, and walk to school. Please wear purple in honor of Ruby Bridges and the changes that came about in our schools thanks to her bravery.
Tuesday - No School
Wednesday - Wear Black because Black is Beautiful. Come dressed in all black. If you only have a black t-shirt, that's ok too.
Thursday - Throwback Thursday! Wear an outfit that is reminiscent of the 70s, 80s or 90s. Many African Americans have made significant contributions to our every day popular culture, music and traditions. On this day, wear things that remind you of these decades because I'm sure if you take the time to research you will find, most of these looks were inspired or connected in some way with African American culture.
Friday - Dress to Impress and wear your Sunday Best. During the time period in our history where the country supported slavery, Sunday worship and two sets of clothes were the only freedoms enslaved communities had. One of these sets of clothes was reserved exclusively for church. Some maintained their dress in reverence towards God, while others made it a moment to present themselves in their best attire and show their style. This was how Sunday Best came to be. It is a tradition that has been passed through generations within the Black community across the world and is still present today. So dress to impress and wear your Sunday best.
